Celebrating Unity in Diversity

Jul 31, 2025 | Claret Seminary

Quezon City, Philippines. The English Camp 2025, held from June 30 to July 26, proved to be a vibrant and enriching experience, bringing together a diverse group of participants for a month of learning, growth, and cultural exchange. Hosted at Claret Seminary, Quezon City, in the Fr. Rhoel Gallardo Province, the camp was more than just a language program; it was a celebration of culture, unity, and friendship.

The camp was led by the experienced Claretian missionary, Bro. Sid Ching, CMF, with the support of 13 dedicated second-year facilitators and additional staff from China and Vietnam. A total of 36 participants from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, and Myanmar initially joined, including seminarians, religious sisters, and high school students, though two Filipino seminarians departed early.

The program officially commenced following a three-day vocational workshop that set a reflective tone. The curriculum was thoughtfully designed to be both autonomous and practical, requiring participants to speak English in their daily lives under a “24/6” rule to create an immersive learning environment. The schedule was packed with a wide array of engaging activities, such as group dynamics, language classes, workshops, and the “Amazing Race.” Highlights included a musical drama presentation and the “Chicken Big Work” activity, all designed to enhance English communication skills and foster teamwork.

A cornerstone of the camp was its emphasis on intercultural understanding. This was most vividly expressed during the Cultural Night, an evening filled with music, dance, traditional attire, and food of the different nations represented. The event was a powerful moment of embracing differences and recognizing a shared identity. Campers didn’t just observe; they actively participated in games and performances, building bridges of understanding and respect. As one camper aptly put it, “English is a string that connects us together.”

While many arrived expecting a simple language course, they discovered a far more profound experience. Through shared meals, group activities, and heartfelt conversations, friendships blossomed and cultural barriers dissolved. The camp was not just a classroom but a living community where language became the medium for connection.

The English Camp 2025 wrapped up with a Thanksgiving Mass and closing ceremony on July 26. Participants left with noticeably improved English skills, a stronger sense of teamwork, and lasting memories. The experience sowed the seeds of understanding and served as a reminder that, in a world often divided, diversity is a strength to celebrate. The camp’s spirit will undoubtedly continue to positively influence the participants’ communities, promoting openness, peace, and a greater appreciation for all cultures.
