From Theology to the Fields: The Claretian Immersion Program in Aurora

Jul 7, 2025 | San Antonio Maria Claret Theology

Baler, Philippines. On June 2, 2025, six Claretian theology students embarked on a one-month immersion and exposure program in the province of Aurora. Filled with joy and anticipation, the students—Sch. Nguyen Van Hoi, CMF; Sch. Nguyen Tien Dat, CMF; Sch. Nguyen Quang Truong, CMF; Sch. Harold Tinaja, CMF; Sch. Tran Van Ba, CMF; and Sch. Tran Van Sinh, CMF—were warmly welcomed and oriented by the staff of the Bataris Formation Center.

The program was divided between two distinct agricultural communities. The students spent the first part of their immersion, until June 16, 2025, in Sta. Monica, Pingit, Baler, a community well known for its vegetable farming. There, locals cultivate a variety of vegetables, including eggplant, string beans, and upo (bottle gourd). For the second leg of their journey, the group transferred to Cadayacan in Maria Aurora, where they remained until June 28. The community in Cadayacan primarily relies on coconut plantations and small-scale agriculture, which is supplemented by occasional sideline jobs, to provide for the daily needs of the people.

Upon being introduced to their respective host families, the students quickly integrated into the rhythm of local life. They lived in solidarity with the community by: working alongside the local people, planting and harvesting crops and preparing soil, sharing meals, cooking, and engaging in day-to-day activities, drinking local brews with the community members.

Throughout this experience, the group encountered the simplicity and authenticity of rural life. They were moved by the stories of resilience, generosity, and deep faith they witnessed in these humble villages. By sharing in moments of laughter, hardship, joy, and challenge, the group was reminded of the value of living in the present and finding profound meaning in the ordinary.

As their immersion concluded, the students expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who made the program possible. They now return to the Theology House to continue their theological studies, carrying with them not just memories, but the invaluable lessons, insights, and enduring spirit of Aurora, which will remain forever etched in their hearts.
